Kazuaki Ishihara While the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2001 was awarded to Knowles, Noyori, and Sharpless for development of asymmetric catalytic reactions using metal-based catalysts, 2021 List MacMillan organocatalysis. This timeline serves highlight two crucial points: 1. Catalysis, i. e., cost-, energy-, atom-efficient remain paramount importance human society; 2. Focus has shifted from (transition) catalysts metal-free, organic on account generally limited supply, potential toxicity, high cost former compared latter. Over last 20 years, a wide variety highly effective metal-free Brønsted-acidic (hard-acid) base been developed. However, redox organocatalysts soft Lewis-acidic severely underdeveloped comparison. In this context, halogen elements have shown promising as active centers or organocatalysts. Especially iodine, strongest halogen-bonding donor among atoms, is very attractive here, given its range accessible valence states (−I VII) usually easy handling iodine-containing inorganic compounds. oxidative catalyzed by compounds, stoichiometric co-oxidants such hydrogen peroxide, alkyl hydroperoxide, mCPBA, oxone, selectfluor conventionally employed, which means that after reactions, co-oxidant-derived byproducts must be removed crude product(s). More recently, photochemical approaches O2 co-oxidant electrochemical without There can thus hardly any doubt recent progress iodine catalysis directed toward environmentally more benign sustainable chemistry fast. order document part burgeoning field, my esteemed colleague, late Kilian Muñiz, I edited book “Iodine Organic Synthesis”, published 2022 Wiley-VCH. Iodine deficiency: consequences and progress toward elimination.
While traditionally associated with cretinism and goiter, iodine deficiency has broad effects on central nervous system development that can occur in the absence of either condition. Any maternal iodine deficiency results in a range of intellectual, motor, and hearing deficits in offspring. This loss in intellectual capacity limits educational achievement of populations and the economic prowess...
متن کاملRecent progress in theoretical and computational chemistry.
Theoretical and Computational Chemistry has seen a remarkable development in the past decades. While it started as a discipline of a few experts in the 1960s, the field has grown enormously due to advances in computational resources and software packages. In addition to the dramatic increase in computer power, a wide range of methods with predictive capabilities such as density functional theor...
متن کاملRecent progress toward the templated synthesis and directed evolution of sequence-defined synthetic polymers.
Biological polymers such as nucleic acids and proteins are ubiquitous in living systems, but their ability to address problems beyond those found in nature is constrained by factors such as chemical or biological instability, limited building-block functionality, bioavailability, and immunogenicity. In principle, sequence-defined synthetic polymers based on nonbiological monomers and backbones ...
متن کاملGrand challenges in inorganic chemistry: toward better life quality and a more sustainable world
Initially limited to the study of minerals, salts, and oxides, inorganic chemistry (IC) emerged as a major actor in technology and sciences during the second part of the last century. Sulfuric and phosphoric acids, ammonia, lime, and hydraulic cement, for instance, are among the top-20 most manufactured chemicals. Electronic industry and solar energy conversion rely on various forms of highly p...
